Colocasia, sansevieria, and bromeliad – the words themselves sound exotic. Nebraska may be far from exotic, but it doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy some of the tropical splendor. Our hot and humid summers are great for growing tropicals in containers, both indoors and out. Those that work great for indoors or partially shaded patio/entry are natives of the jungle understory where the canopy shades and humidifies them. This group is composed of Alocasia, Bromeliads, Colocasia, Philodendrons, and Pothos. The rest seem to take shade or love the sun as long as they get plenty of water. This group is composed of Crotons, Dracena, Palms, Plectranthis, Sansevieria, Shefflera, and Strobilanthes. Take a few of these home with you this summer and make your days a little more sultry.
