How do you know when it is time to divide plants or know when they are reaching the end of their life span?
Each plant has different life spans and ways in which they deteriorate over time. Here’s when to relocate:
1) Is the grass or shrub dying out in the middle with little or no new growth there?
2) Did it fail to flower this year?
3) Does the over all plant seem to have more sparse foliage than previous years?
4) Is the tree slowly dying out from the top down?
– If it is a perennial you can often dig it up, divide it or remove the dead and replant it.
– If a shrub, you can prune out the dead or cut it all down to a few inches in late winter, early spring to see if it rejuvenates.
– If a tree, have a licensed professional inspect the plant to determine the cause and if it is treatable.
