As water features have become more and more popular we are getting more questions about maintenance and up keep. The pumps for water features have evolved like everything else, so it is necessary that you know what kind of pump runs your fountain, water fall or bubbling boulder. There are a few that are deep enough to run all winter long. Most water features, however should be shut off, cleaned out and drained before a hard freeze. That can vary quite a bit depending on the year. After we have a few chilly nights we begin to pull the switch. The newer pumps are driven magnetically and do not incur damage if left to dry out completely. Older pumps must keep their seals and rings wet and are kept in a bucket of water in a basement or closet over winter. If this is the case, keep an eye on it to make sure water does not evaporate from the bucket too much. Come spring thaw, a good thorough cleaning of the water feature and reconnecting the pump is all you need!
